All Japanese nationals must submit the “Overseas Residential Registration (ORR)” to a nearby Japanese Embassy or Consulate-General upon arrival. (This is a statutory requirement as specified by the Passport Act. You can also submit via the Internet. )
In case you are involved in accidents, troubles or unforeseen disasters, the Japanese Embassy/ Consulate-General is supposed to provide support using the location of residence and the emergency contact given on the “ORR”.
*Please note that change of address and your return to Japan must also be notified.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has introduced a "Tabi Regi" system in July 2014 (for Japanese citizens). By entering the required information (itinerary, travel destination and contact details) into the Ministry's dedicated website, you can receive up-to-date information on your travel destination and email notifications of any arising emergency events as well as be contacted in cases of emergency, etc. We highly recommend that outbound students and researchers register with the system.

Also, please make sure to have the contact details of overseas diplomatic establishments near the destination of your study abroad program before you travel. (You can automatically have the contact once you register in “Tabi Regi”.
