パラリンピックブレイン ―ニューロリハモデルとしてパラアスリートの脳―

パラリンピックアスリートは人間の中枢神経が有する自己回復可能性を示す最高のモデルである。人間の身体は、麻痺や欠損によって一部の機能を喪失しても、トレーニングによって回復あるいは他の部位が喪失した機能を代行する能力がある。特に脳はそれらの能力に最も富む身体组织である。パラリンピックアスリートは例外なく身体の一部の機能に障害を有している。そして残された機能を最大限用いつつ、更にそれらを最大限向上させることでパフォーマンスの最大化を図っている。パラアスリートの脳が、そのようなパフォーマンス向上を目指す高いモチベーションと日々のトレーニングによって特異的に再編されていることを、私たちは複数のメダリストの脳を調べることで見出した。本プロジェクトは、様々な障害特性、競技特性を有するパラアスリート、とりわけトップアスリートの脳をその機能と構造面から調べることで、機能的および解剖学的再編について明らかにする。現在までに、脳性麻痺水泳、視覚障害水泳、下腿義足幅跳び、下腿義足走り高跳び、大腿義足幅跳び、パワーリフティングのトップアスリートの脳を機能的脳画像（fMRI）や経頭蓋磁気刺激（TMS）を用いて調べ、それぞれ特異的な脳再編が生じていることを観察している。今後更に组织的、系統的にパラアスリートの脳を調べることで、人間の脳が有する自己再編能力に迫ることが可能となる。本プロジェクトの成果は、再生医療における効果的リハビリテーションの開発や高齢者の健康寿命延伸などに直接的に還元されることが期待される。
