Overview

´ºÓêÖ±²¥app attaches great importance to global education and encourages students to study abroad and participate in international activities.
This time, we are planning an exciting event with Dr. Cynthia M. Friend, president of the Kavli Foundation. Prior to joining the foundation in January 2021, Dr. Friend was a member of the Harvard University faculty since 1982. At Harvard she served in numerous leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
This event will take place during her visit to the University of Tokyo. Dr. Cynthia M. Friend will engage in a dialogue with Executive Vice President Kaori Hayashi, Professor Mio Murao from the School of Science and students. This event is moderated by Vice President of ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app and Director of the Center for Global Education(GlobE), Professor Yujin Yaguchi. We invite all ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app students join this informative, meaningful, and inspiring event!

Dr. Cynthia M. Friend (For further details on her biography, please refer to .) Cynthia M. Friend, Ph.D, is president and CEO of The Kavli Foundation and acting director of physical sciences. Before joining Kavli in January 2021, Dr. Friend was a member of Harvard University faculty where she is the T.W. Richard Professor of Chemistry Emerita. Friend served in several leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Director of The Rowland Institute at Harvard. She was an Associate Lab Director (2011-12) at SLAC National Accelerator Lab, a preeminent international facility for X-ray science at Stanford University. Friend¡¯s research focused on nanoscience applied to energy sciences, sustainability, and environmental chemistry. She currently serves on the Bruker Instruments board and as Chair of the U.S. DOE¡¯s Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee. Friend is a member of the NAS and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Chemical Society, and AAAS. She was a postdoctoral researcher in Chemical Engineering at Stanford, earned her Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley, and her B.S. from U.C. Davis.
