Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences

The Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences is an institute at the University of Tokyo that focuses on education and research in mathematics and mathematical sciences.

The Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences provides education in the areas of mathematics and mathematical sciences, and is responsible for all mathematical education (lectures, seminars and research guidance) at the University of Tokyo, including at the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science and the Mathematical Sciences Program of the Department of Integrated Sciences in the Senior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Mathematics is the discipline that aims to solve the mysteries of the universe by shedding light on the mathematical structures hidden within its depths. Also, mathematics was the first of all academic disciplines to be codified, and it is still in a constant state of evolution. Mathematics is characterized by abstractness, universality and freedom of ideas, and it deals with an extremely diverse array of themes. These themes are organically connected to form the expansive system of the discipline, and the achievements of mathematics serve as a basis for science, technology and in a wide range of academic fields.

As stated before, the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences is an institute established to conduct education and research in mathematics and mathematical sciences. The Graduate School’s educational goals are to foster researchers who have acquired systematic knowledge and advanced research capabilities in the fields of mathematics and mathematical sciences, and to cultivate creative and talented people who, through their solid grounding in mathematics and mathematical sciences as well as their acquisition of professional decision-making ability from a broad perspective, will be able to usher in a new era by becoming actively involved in a wide range of areas in both society and the international community as a whole.
