The Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies/the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies is an institution that focuses on information, the most important concept needed to understand modern society, and promotes interdisciplinary research and education in a wide variety of fields covering the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences. To maximize the effects gained from interaction between the latest research and education, this institution is separated into two sections: a research section (the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies) and a section for education (the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies). With this system, the institution continues to challenge problems facing modern society. The Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies (GSII) is comprised of six courses: Socio-information and Communication Studies; Cultural and Human Information Studies; Emerging Design and Informatics; Applied Computer Science; Biostatistics and Bioinformatics; and Information, Technology, and Society in Asia (ITASIA). ITASIA focuses on the information society in Asia, including Japan. All the classes in the ITASIA program are taught in English, a language that has become a lingua franca in Asia.
The policy of the GSII is to foster interdisciplinary abilities after having students master knowledge in their specialized fields. The GSII offers various classes in which students can deepen their understanding of specific areas. It also provides opportunities for interdisciplinary learning in which students can study together with those in different fields. There are classes that focus on problem-based learning, as well as courses that allow students to study their specialized areas in an interdisciplinary manner. In addition, our students are required to carry out research projects so that they can use the specialized and interdisciplinary knowledge they have acquired to create new knowledge. Before starting their research projects, students first learn about research ethics. Based on this learning, students conduct research while receiving thorough individual support and supervision. Also provided are opportunities for organization-wide exchanges of opinions and a system of assistant supervisors so that students can enhance the quality of their research from multiple viewpoints.
The Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies/the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies fosters talented students who tenaciously tackle problems that modern society faces by utilizing specialized knowledge, while also not limiting themselves to the boundaries of their fields of specialty. In addition, the institution works with society, actively communicating its research results to the public.
