Students will engage with theories, concepts, and methodologies from media and cultural studies, communication, anthropology, and sociology, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to examine various aspects of daily life in Japan.

Focusing on art and fashion, urban culture, popular culture, and the phenomenon of idols and fandom in Japan, this course will guide students in understanding how Japanese national identity is constructed through these mediums. Students will study the development and transformation of ethnic communities in the Tokyo metropolitan area and analyze how the global spread of Japanese media, including anime and games, impacts diverse audiences and popular cultures worldwide.

In each class, the lecturer will present core ideas and concepts, followed by group discussions that encourage critical engagement and analysis among students.
