Grading Systems by College, Faculties and Graduate Schools
College, Faculties and Graduate Schools of the University of Tokyo assess performance in the following manner:
- Junior Division, College of Arts and Sciences
Until AY2016: 3 levels (A, B, and C)
Effective from AY2017: 4 levels (A+, A, B, and C) - Faculties (except Law) (Medicine, Engineering, Letters, Science, Agriculture, Economics, Arts and Sciences, Education, Pharmaceutical Sciences)
Until AY2013: 3 levels (A, B, and C)
Effective from AY2014 : 4 levels (A+, A, B, and C) - Faculty of Law
Until AY2004: 4 levels (A, B+,B, and C)
Effective from AY2005: 4 levels (A+, A, B, and C) - Graduate Schools (Humanities and Sociology, Education, Law and Politics [excl. School of Law], Economics, Arts and Sciences, Science, Engineering, Agricultural and Life Sciences, Medicine [excl. School of Public Health], Pharmaceutical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Frontier Sciences, Information Science and Technology, Interdisciplinary Information Studies, Public Policy [International Public Policy])
3 levels (A, B, and C) - Graduate School of Medicine (School of Public Health only), Graduate School of Public Policy (Public Policy)
4 levels (A+, A, B, and C) - Graduate Schools for Law and Politics (School of Law only)
Students enrolled until AY2011: 4 levels (A+, A, B, and C)
Students enrolled since AY2012: 5 levels (A+, A, B, C+ and C-) - Center for Global Education
4 levels (A+, A, B, and C)
※ There are other “Pass” designations in addition to the grades mentioned above.
Furthermore, credits transferred from other institutions/universities are indicated by the grade “Q” or “TR”. There are some faculties which use the following designations.
Faculty of Law “EX” same as “Q”
Faculty of Engineering “P” same as “Pass”
Faculty of Economics “PH” means Passing with Honors.
