1. Overview
The Graduate School of Engineering has 18 departments featuring principal engineering technology spanning a wide range of fields. The objective of graduate school education is the acquisition of a more advanced degree of engineering knowledge and research ability. In particular, future research and development is carried out autonomously in the Doctoral program, with an aim to also acquire leadership ability. The practice of graduate school education differs by department; however, schooling by means of the development of special fields of study has become increasingly important in the Master's program. Research at the Graduate School of Engineering is not just restricted to the "hard" studies centered on experimentation. Instead, diversity in the range of research fields is increasing with research concerning information, artificial intelligence and CAD/CAM; research relating to the environment, disaster prevention, energy and urban social systems; and research into the interdisciplinary fields of life science and medicine which focus on the human. Research is conducted while maintaining a cooperative relationship with other fields of engineering, resulting in the pioneering and application of various new fields. Recently, society's deep concern regarding environmental problems has come to be reflected in research, with issues relating to society and the environment continuing to be stressed in every field of engineering.
The importance of the fields of Informatics and Life Sciences is continuing to increase, and problems that cannot be resolved within the traditional framework of engineering, such as those of environmental studies, are increasingly becoming the target of research. In order to respond to this age of borderless fields of study, more flexible forms of research structure are becoming necessary.
The Graduate School of Engineering is the largest Graduate School at the University of Tokyo with almost a third of the overseas students studying at the University. Full and continuous support for overseas students is important, as is the further internationalization of Japanese students. At the Graduate School of Engineering, the concept of further internationalization in education and research, and specific policies based on it, are continuously scrutinized, and great effort is devoted to the enrichment of overseas student education and the expansion of international research exchange.

Modern life is constructed according to the utilization of civil engineering technology, and humans' improvement and maintenance of the surrounding environment. Civil engineering, including various technologies necessary to our civilized and cultural life, is a technological system for the creation of an environment in which humans can live in a civilized manner. Infrastructure such as roads, railway systems, telecommunication facilities, and essential utilities are indispensable for modern urban life. Away from urban centers, on the other hand, civil engineering technology also has essential roles to create agreeable waterfronts, to maintain plentiful rivers and forests and to preserve the natural environment. The Department of Civil Engineering is an integrated group of various specialized fields related to human life and environments and aims to foster distinctive and talented individuals who will be responsible for the creation of our future environment.

Department of Architecture
The scope of architecture is extraordinarily broad, covering the preservation and restoration of ancient cultural heritage buildings and communities; the skyscrapers characteristic of modern cities; the housing production, maintenance and preservation that forms local infrastructure; the maintenance, seismic diagnosis and reinforcement against the earthquakes, fires and typhoons that threaten our livelihoods; air conditioning and illumination in order to create comfortable living conditions; and urban construction and redevelopment. Its relationship with society is truly intimate. The Graduate School of the Department of Architecture aims to develop experts and researchers who have acquired a more advanced knowledge in each of these particular fields. The teaching staff for the Graduate School numbers a total of 37, including staff from the Laboratory for Earthquake Research Institute, the Institute of Industrial Science, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, in addition to the staff at the Hongo Campus.

Department of Urban Engineering
Both urban and environmental issues have emerged in distinctive and endemic forms in all communities, with underlying characteristics associated with national economic and social behavior interacting with other countries. Rather than looking at each issue superficially, we should fully understand these characteristics. Based on analysis and understanding, we can effectively resolve urban and environmental issues through engineering techniques and practical measures. This is the responsibility of Urban Engineering.
From this perspective, areas from the local to the national scale, and to the overall global environment are considered, including both urban and rural environments. Technical education and research is carried out based on engineering technology while maintaining a close relationship with the social sciences and humanities including law, economics, sociology, history, psychology, aesthetics and philosophy.

Department of Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering carries out academic research into the five specialized fields of Solid Mechanics/Materials, Heat and Fluids, Dynamics and Control of Machinery, Design and Production and Biotechnology. The results of this education and research are applied to resolve important issues facing modern society in areas such as the environment and energy, medicine and welfare, industrial systems and technology creation. By means of a systematic educational curriculum and research activities that span a broad range of fields from leading-edge science to applied industrial technology, the department nurtures excellent researchers and engineers who possess a comprehensive perspective on technology and human society and the ability to independently discover and resolve issues.

Precision Engineering discusses methodologies to approach targets rather than physical objects in specific domains. Based on the basic disciplines of mechanical physics, mathematical information, and measurement and control, this department promotes education and research on production science that is structured on fundamental technologies, such as precision measurement, precision machining, micro-systems, mechatronics, and design and production systems, as well as creation of intelligent machines, information and knowledge systematization for products and manufacturing processes, and their applications to biomedical devices and service robots. Through these activities, the department aims to contribute to a sustainable society with harmony between humans, artifacts and the environment.

Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics
The progress of aeronautics and astronautics not only directly contributes to the expansion of the world of knowledge and human activity, but also intimately relates to our daily lives through a fusion with technologies such as communications, positioning and Earth observation. In order to design and realize ultramodern hardware such as aircraft, spacecraft, satellites and propulsion systems, the development of cutting-edge technology in each field is necessary. The ability to horizontally integrate and coordinate such systems is also necessary. In our department, we are engaged in the development of scientific and technological fields relating to aeronautics and astronautics by means of research activities that pioneer new fields of study.

Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems was newly established at the Graduate School of Engineering in 2008.
Electrical engineering and its areas of application have become indispensable to modern society. Thus far, the Graduate School of Engineering has carried out education and research in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Electronics Engineering based on physics with a focus on electromagnetism and quantum physics. Meanwhile, the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences aims to create fields that fuse both the physical and the informatics sides of electrical engineering and has carried out education and research in the field of basic informatics for over nine years. Since 2008, the supervisory staff of these three departments have been united in the singular new Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems. The ship has just set sail on the voyage to new discoveries.
Two programs are established in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems. The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Course implements research and education to further deepen conventional power and expand it to new fields. The Computing and Communication Systems Course aims to pioneer new fields combining traditional power with informatics.

The Department of Bioengineering builds on existing mechanical, electrical, physical, chemical and materials engineering disciplines and cross-integrates these with biosciences. Nuclear power will help support Japan's energy needs in the future. It is therefore vital that nuclear power plants should be more highly reliable.
