○Embrace Differences Award "Lilies - 彼岸花" by Rachel Ho
(Essay)
Every autumn, the Kinchakuda Majushage Park is blanketed in the crimson of the hundreds and millions of beautiful higanbana. I was surprised by the presence of the lone white flower, but it never occurred to me to think that it did not belong there. Especially because these spider lilies are such a signature part of Japanese culture, this image illustrates studying abroad in Japan. Far from being a lonely experience, my life as a student has become all the fuller because of my friends on campus and off-campus. This image illustrates the harmony and enrichment international students can experience from being different, while they share and grow in the same soil of Japan.

○Embrace Differences Award "Pipette Bouquet/ ピペットの花束" by Nidhi Rao
(Essay)
Tucked away in a corner of our high tech lab, the trash bin gently caresses evidence from every single experiment. Each pipette that falls into the trash bin falls like the determined arrow of an ancient warrior. The trash bin doesn't discriminate against the successful experiments, or the failed. I know it can't identify the PhD student from the skilled technician either- it only reflects the collective faith our lab members have in research. The proof of our hard work might not always end up in a scientific journal, but the trash bin definitely rewards us with a treat to the eyes: a lovely rosette of used pipettes at the end of every month.

I was a "super-domestic" person who had never left Japan until I was 35 years old, and it was thanks to him that I became an "international" person. He taught me English from scratch when I could not speak the language at all. Although COVID-19 tried to separate us, he continued to teach me English every day from his home country via the Internet. This picture is symbolic as it depicts our friendship and joy as we were able to conquer difficulties especially language barrier. We finally met in person after having a plethora of virtual lessons.
