This catalog documents the ´ºÓêÖ±²¥app Asian Research Library Exhibition 2023: “Experiencing Societies in Asia through Literacy Education Materials: The Collection Donated by the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO,” which was held in November 2023 at an exhibition hall and other venues in the General Library, University of Tokyo. The Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU) is a public-interest foundation founded in 1971 to promote mutual cultural exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region. The center started literacy education programs for neoliterates in the 1980s and for women in the 1990s, subsequently collecting non-formal education materials in 25 countries in the Asia-Pacific region through these programs. In 2014, the ACCU donated to the Asian Research Library entire 3,487 materials, which were organized as the ACCU Collection and published as a series of Catalog of the Asian Research Library Collection of the Literacy Education Materials Formerly Owned by the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO.
The materials displayed in the exhibition and concluded in this exhibition catalog are only a small part of the ACCU collection, this carefully curated selection of the materials effectively represents the collection’s characteristics, tendencies, and unique attributes. Given that, the ACCU collection is accumulated materials written in various Asian languages, which are rarely seen in Japan, we asked people at the University of Tokyo and other universities and institutes to support our cataloging efforts and publishing endeavors. The completion of this exhibition catalog and exhibition itself are also attributed to some young researchers and graduates, who have profound knowledge of Asian languages.
Of particular interest to readers might be materials written on identical subjects in different languages with different illustrations. For example, this catalog includes materials, which are written in 14 languages, on the same subject of “Why literacy for women is important” (No.2-1 to No. 2-14). Their storylines are almost the same, but the illustrations reflect diverse regional characteristics (some are written in different languages but use identical illustrations). Through some examples of life practices in these materials, we can see that literacy not only provides women with more choices and better standards of living but also helps them foster self-esteem. This catalog also includes part of the contents and outlines of the 14 materials, which helps us understand more concretely the social circumstances and daily lives of women, particularly in rural areas, during the period when these materials were created. In this catalog and exhibition, however, most materials show(ed) only their front covers, so we regret that readers and visitors are/were not able to enjoy the content of those same-subject materials and others.
Should this catalog spark your interest in examining these materials further, we recommend you access the original materials of the ACCU Collection according to the procedure below:
