Learning about the ecology of fish, which complete their life history by migrating between oceans and rivers, not only deepens our biological knowledge of the fish, but also broadens our understanding of the natural environment of the oceans and rivers that is essential for their growth and survival. Understanding about fish that have long been used as an important food resource not only provides information on the nutritional value of the fish, but also fosters an understanding of the deep relationship between fish and humans through fishing and aquaculture, distribution systems, culture, and beliefs.
 
This book is an educational resource for middle and upper primary school students, suitable for learning about living creatures and humans from various perspectives through the familiar example of freshwater eels. The book is written in plain language with abundant photographs and illustrations, yet the content is not confined to elementary concepts. It offers explanations from both biological and socio-cultural perspectives, covering topics such as the morphological and functional traits of eels, the species of eels distributed around the world and their relatives, research leading to the discovery of spawning grounds in the open sea thousands of kilometers from Japan, advances in aquaculture technology to artificially raise eels from eggs to matured adults, and social issues such as current habitat environments, resource status, and complex international trade.
