Tokyo, the world's largest urban area, faces significant issues with its population decline and suburban sprawl–trends that have become matters of international concern. This book aims to clarify the realities and implications of sustainable agriculture in the suburbs of large cities, drawing on insights from a collaboration of scholars from different fields.

Our findings demonstrate that diversified businesses, such as direct-to-consumers sales, farm experience services, pick-your-own services, and organic farming, thrive in urban areas. We also find that agricultural managers gain entrepreneurial motivation, social connections, and family involvement through activities that promote sustainability.

An increasing number of farm experience services in urban areas are now operated by private companies adding significant value through extensive, high-quality services. Community gardens, where local residents engage in farming, are supported by various stakeholders, including educational and welfare organizations.

Conversely, the conversion of small-plot farmland near urban areas is increasing; farmland is expected to continue declining because of inheritance issues. The tax system plays an important role in preserving these lands.

This book also addresses resilience in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The demand for health benefits and interpersonal communication has driven increased sales at farm stands and farmers' markets. The number of users participating in farm experience services has risen, despite infection control restrictions. In community gardens, local residents participate in farm work to maintain their physical and mental well-being.
