Have you ever been so impressed by someone else’s work that you felt compelled to embark on a creative endeavor of your own, or do something similarly creative? The authors refer such transformative moments as “inspiring art communication.” This concept plays an important role in helping people realize their creative potential and enjoy a life enriched with creativity. In recent years, educational practices and workshops geared toward nurturing this inspiring art communication have been held in a variety of learning settings, including schools, museums, galleries, and online.

The creation of these spaces for inspired art communication is described in detail in “Inspiring Museums: Seeking New Possibilities for Cultural Public Spaces” (2016, edited by Nakashoji, Shindo, Yamamoto, and Okada) [in Japanese]. Building upon this perspective, this book focuses on the process of inspiration that drives expression and creation following the appreciation of art works, i.e., the “link between appreciation and expression.” We then introduce instances of workshops connecting appreciation and expression. A theoretical discussion from the perspective of cognitive science and psychology underscores how workshop experiences can lead to creation.

This book also explores how learning can be assessed with the assumption that the practice of inspiring art communication can be improved or developed anew, rather than viewing it as a one-time opportunity. Various stakeholders are involved in holding workshops. So, how can we go about achieving a holistic understanding of the practice without being biased toward any one person’s point of view? With these goals in mind, our practical assessment incorporates case studies from practitioners as well as researchers. Numerous workshop practitioners are featured in columns discussing the background of workshop development, design considerations, and post-practice initiatives. By incorporating perspectives from both researchers and practitioners in this way, this book seeks to provide a holistic understanding of inspiring art communication.

Even people who find art appreciation a little stuffy can surely be creative themselves! How can we design and evaluate workshops that make people feel they can be creative in this manner? This book is intended for readers who are involved in the psychology of art, pedagogy, art communication, museum visitor studies, art workshop facilitation, students of art communication, or anyone with an interest in workshop participants and the practice itself. As you delve into the 13 practical case studies, we hope you will feel as if you are participating in the workshops yourself, gaining valuable insights into the world of art appreciation.
