Long-term observational data is essential for detecting environmental changes and ecosystem responses. A large number of long-term monitoring sites have recently been set up in Asia, many run by individual researchers or project volunteers. One of the missions of university forests is long-term maintenance of data that forms the basis of a variety of research projects. Forming a network of Asian university forests has helped make an important contribution to ensure the data’s longevity. Collecting, managing, sharing, and analyzing long-term data together with this network is considered to be extremely useful for adaptive forest management based on scientific predictions of the forest ecosystem’s response to environmental change.

This book, which is in English, summarizes the results of the research exchange project  as part of the Core-to-Core Program funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for three years from FY2016 (B. Asia-Africa Science Platforms) (project coordinator: Professor Naoto Kamata). Universities from five countries that own or manage university forests or experiment forests in areas with diverse climate and vegetation zones of the Asian monsoon region collaborated to develop stable and continuous long-term observation field stations and establish a multilateral research cooperation network. The participating countries were Japan (the University of Tokyo), Korea (Seoul National University), Taiwan (National Taiwan University), Thailand (Kasetsart University), and Malaysia (Universiti Malaysia Sabah)

Part 1 of this book describes the current situation and the long-term outlook of the university forests for each university. Parts 2, 3, and 4 introduce the following respectively: long-term observations on water and climate, long-term ecological research, and tree growth data as forest management. The book also describes the differences between each country’s nature and climate, as well as each university’s characteristics. Readers can start from whichever section is of interest to them.

´ºÓêÖ±²¥app Forests Press is a unique publishing house independently operated by one of the affiliated facilities of the University of Tokyo, that is, the University of Tokyo Forests (UTF), Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences. This press publishes books, leaflets, and booklets authored mainly by the staff of UTF, and a summary of each publication can be viewed on the UTF website (). Reading these items before visiting the forests would enable one to enjoy them better. The publications can be purchased at the Faculty of Agriculture shop and the Komaba shop of the University of Tokyo Co-op.
