This book is a collaborative work in which Eisuke Wakamatsu, one of Japan's leading contemporary critics, and Yoshihisa Yamamoto, an expert in Western medieval philosophy, engage in a dialogue to clarify the essence of Christianity.

Wakamatsu and Yamamoto are close friends who both practiced Christianity under the guidance of Father Yoji Inoue in their youth. Yoji Inoue was a Japanese priest who dedicated his life to reinterpreting Christianity through the lens of the Japanese heart. Wakamatsu and Yamamoto share a common concern about how to root Christianity, which has primarily developed in the Western world, in Japan. With this shared concern as a backdrop, an in-depth exploration into the fundamental Christian themes such as "love," "mystery," "word," "history," "evil," and "holiness" is developed through their dialogue.

One of the significant characteristics of this book is its dialogue based on abundant quotations from classical works. As the words of a truly diverse range of authors are cited, including those from the Old Testament, the New Testament, Cicero, Augustine, Aelred of Rievaulx, Peter of Blois, Thomas Aquinas, C.S. Lewis, Pascal, Goethe, John Henry Newman, Rainer Maria Rilke, Simone Weil, Gabriel Marcel, Pope Benedict XVI, Myoe, Muneyoshi Yanagi, Kanzo Uchimura, Soichi Iwashita, Yoshihiko Yoshimitsu, Yasuo Ochi, Yoji Inoue, Shusaku Endo, Atsuko Suga, and Fukumi Shimura, this book serves not only as an introduction to Christianity but also as an in-depth introduction to the history of thought in both Eastern and Western traditions. Through the resonance of diverse voices from authors discussing Christianity, a new framework for discussing Christianity begins to emerge in this book. By combining the interpretation of classical texts with analyses of contemporary issues, readers are presented with a path to explore the depth of Christianity and its contemporary possibilities.

The book begins with the observation that Christianity is strange and difficult to understand. Rather than simplifying Christianity, the starting point for properly grasping Christianity is to pause and confront its strangeness and complexity. This book includes various clues for reinterpreting Christianity not simply as a relic of the past but as something that can still offer intellectual stimulation and guidance for life in the contemporary world.
