Symposium on Nature Positive: A Japanese approach (´ºÓêÖ±²¥app Faculty of Agriculture 150th anniversary commemorative symposium)
Active discussions are taking place within international society regarding methods of halting and reversing the trend of the loss of biodiversity and the natural environment, in an aim to create a society that coexists in harmony with nature. Some say that transformative change in society is necessary to achieve this.
With these circumstances in mind, we think that it is vital to revisit the initiatives of the people on the frontlines of their respective fields, and once again discuss how to achieve this change. For instance, when people think of starting new nature-positive initiatives at the frontlines of agricultural production and other such sites, it is necessary to procure funding to do so. However, there is currently no standard for ideas and issues related to creating a business, and none of the individual cases are shared amongst the individuals involved. New ideas are necessary for coming up with ways to create value in activities for coexisting with nature, plans for connecting businesses and consumers, and realizing sustainable finance. In Japan, there are also unique initiatives being carried out which are tailored to Japan¡¯s specific conditions, such as its diverse geographic features and high amounts of rainfall. It is important for us to discuss these initiatives and properly understand Japan¡¯s position in the world.
The goal of this symposium is to engage in dialogue with a mixture of people from different backgrounds, including students and faculty from the University of Tokyo, startup companies, and those involved in the frontlines of production, and thereby gain new insights on these issues. Also, at the symposium we aim to launch the Nature Positive Network, which will be an industry-government-academia network originating from the University of Tokyo.
At the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Tokyo, we are considering how to construct this organization that will change society through the power of living things, and through which society will protect a diverse range of living things. Would you like to think about this with us?
