[Overview]
The Center for Global Commons at the University of Tokyo (CGC) will hold a seminar entitled “Natural Capital on Balance Sheet” on November 21st at the Japan Pavilion at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29, held in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan, from November 11th to 22nd, 2024).
The collapse of natural systems poses the most significant threat to businesses, economies, and societies globally. Addressing and reversing this trend requires “reset” of our current economic system with the natural system and the most powerful lever is the inclusion of true value of natural capital in all economic decision-making.
It is not an easy task as our current economic system has taken nature for granted. It is true that recently several initiatives are addressing this matter, but progress remains fragmented and not yet influencing business and investment decisions sufficiently to halt nature loss by 2030. We need to accelerate our effort to fully take account of value of nature and upcoming COP30 (Brazil, 2025) provides us with huge momentum.
This panel discussion provides an opportunity to discuss how policy makers, business, academia can work together to accelerate our pathway for resetting our economic system in harmony with nature.
