Teaching Academic Oral Communication through Social Media Analysis
Date: Tuesday, February 4, 12:15-13:00 (JST)
Online: Zoom
Language: English
Speaker: Eric Vanden Bussche
Abstract
This talk examines how students in an academic communication course (FLOW) deepened their understanding of rhetorical strategies through the analysis of Donald Trump’s social media posts. It will demonstrate how this exercise not only helped students critically evaluate social media sources but also encouraged them to develop an awareness of their own rhetorical choices and discursive practices. In the process, students explored how rhetorical practices vary across different settings, from social media platforms to academic presentations. By engaging with real-world examples, students were able to refine their discursive practices and strengthen their ability to present research persuasively in both academic and public contexts.
