The Whys and Ways of Assessing Student Competences: Ideas from the 50th JALT International Conference
Date: Thursday, December 19, 12:15-13:00 (JST)
Online: Zoom
Language: English
Speaker: Francesco Cangemi
Abstract
With more than a thousand participants, the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) conference is an important annual event that brings together educators from kindergarten to graduate school. In this seminar I will share my experiences as a participant and as a speaker. After briefly introducing the conference and its themes, I will focus on insights drawn from talks and workshops on the topic of assessment and evaluation. I will then provide a brief overview of my own presentation on a specific aspect of student assessment, namely the interplay of structural, cognitive and communicative dimensions in the quantification of competence in a second language. I will conclude by introducing a funding scheme that supports JALT members in their research on education in Japan.
