New MOOC “Adapting to the Effects of Climate Change on Quality of Life” opened! Urban engineering approach to climate change and its impact on people's lives, mitigation and adaptation measures

October 11, 2024

Our New MOOC, “Adapting to the Effects of Climate Change on Quality of Life,” started on October 9, 2024.

In this course, we learn about global warming and how to cope with it from the perspectives of “mitigation” and “adaptation.”

As mentioned in the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, human activities are causing global warming, mainly through greenhouse gas emissions, and the Earth’s surface temperature is rising. Global climate change affects people’s lives in many aspects, such as health damage, crop damage, and causing natural disasters. To cope with this situation, we have to consider how to mitigate global warming and how to “adapt” to climate change at the same time.

In this course, participants will learn about the current global and Japanese situation through both mitigation and adaptation and climate change’s impact on human lives, and adaptation measures using Japanese case studies.

This course, which consists of four modules, introduces basic information on the global and Japanese situation regarding climate change and its impact on people’s quality of life. The case studies will focus on fruit tree production, city design, analysis of urban material weight, the future of leisure industries and the attempt to introduce public transport. These current situations will be discussed using the urban engineering approach.

The course is offered in English and available at all times, and anyone can take the course from the Coursera website:
