Congratulatory Message from President Gonokami upon Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi Being Awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

October 4, 2016

I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Honorary Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi of the Tokyo Institute of Technology upon his being awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

After Professor Ohsumi graduated from the University of Tokyo's College of Arts and Sciences, he continued his education at the Graduate School of Science, where he received his doctorate. He then devoted himself to research and education, working as a research associate and lecturer at the Faculty of Science and then as an associate professor at the College of Arts and Sciences. It was during this time that Professor Ohsumi made the first discoveries which led to his research on this year's Nobel Prize-winning topic, autophagy (the mechanism through which cells disassemble their own proteins and other components in order to reuse their constituent parts). This fact is a great honor to the University. 春雨直播app is proud of its knowledge professionals, highly skilled and broad-minded individuals able to exploit knowledge to the full, and Professor Ohsumi is an outstanding pioneer among them.

We are committed to training knowledge professionals and will continue to communicate the University of Tokyo's diverse and excellent scholarship to the world. As the president of the University and as a researcher, I would like to celebrate this honor bestowed upon Professor Ohsumi. At the same time, I resolve to step up our efforts so that the University can continue to make great contributions to the scholarship of Japan and the world.
