The media is full of words about climate change: extreme heat and heat stroke, torrential rains and floods, renewable energy, electric vehicles, ESG investing, and more. Climate change is one of the most important social issues and there is growing concern in society. The Internet, including social media, is flooded with a vast amount of information, but the information includes not only accurate information, but also a lot of questionable information. What should we base our thinking and actions on in such situations? Climate Change and Society is an introductory book that aims to answer these questions.
This book was written by faculty members and researchers working on various topics related to climate change at the University of Tokyo, following the launch of the Organization for Collaborative Research on Climate and Society, which spans various departments of the University of Tokyo. It is intended to be a textbook for understanding the issue of climate change from multiple perspectives. The goal was to create a textbook that integrates elements of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, and that would serve as a basis for advancing research aimed at solving the problem of climate change. We explained climate change from disciplinary principles and fundamentals, and organized basic information in a balanced manner from multiple perspectives based on broad interdisciplinary knowledge.
The book has 27 authors because its content incorporates knowledge from a wide range of academic disciplines, from the natural sciences, including science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine, to the humanities and social sciences, including law, economics, and philosophy. The writing of the book was the result of numerous discussions among the editors and authors.
The book consists of seven chapters, covering the historical background and mechanisms of climate change, impact assessment, adaptation and mitigation measures, governance, and actions that individuals can take. Chapter 1 provides the foundation for understanding why climate change has become an important societal issue, while Chapter 2 defines the systems and their interrelationships as they relate to climate change. Chapter 3 explains the mechanism of climate change based on Earth system science, and Chapter 4 discusses impact assessment and adaptation measures. Chapter 5 describes mitigation measures, focusing on the differences between Japan and other countries, and Chapter 6 discusses the relationship between domestic and international policies, climate justice, and sustainability. The final chapter, Chapter 7, discusses what you can do as an individual.
Climate change is an ongoing scientific and societal challenge. You can take personal action, such as conserving energy, but you can also talk to your friends and family, start a new business, and trigger social change. It is not just about taking action. It is a complex and uncertain issue, so it is important to take the time to think deeply about it. We hope that this book will inspire more people to become active in academic and practical fields related to climate change.
