This book is a compilation of the treasured manuscripts published in the newsletter of The Japanese Society for the Study of Career Education (*1) with additions and corrections. It covers diverse topics, including changes in schools and workplaces during the COVID-19 crisis, diversity, work styles, and future directions in relation to career education, and embodies the title of the book, “The Scope of Career Education.” It contains manuscripts during the 4-year period from 2019-2022 of the newsletter, which is planned and edited by the Information Committee of The Japanese Society for the Study of Career Education. The newsletter is intended for both career education specialists and the general public. There is a “unifying theme of the year” established annually; authors who meet the criteria for each theme for each theme are gathered from Japan and abroad, and the book’s contents are categorized according to the theme.
Part 1 focuses on how schools and workplaces responded to the various changes in career education that were forced upon them, including online support during the COVID-19 crisis. Readers will learn about online classes and school events, club activities, job search support, hiring, balancing work and child-rearing, and examples of various innovations in work styles.
Part 2 focuses on diversity as a subject of career education. The status and issues of career education and support for foreign children and students, students with disabilities, sexual minorities and women are discussed from the perspectives of those involved and their supporters.
Changes in work styles due to the COVID-19 crisis have been occurring, and Part 3 focuses on work styles other than working for a company. It focuses on career education in various situations such as starting a business, succession, changing jobs, transitions to second career, etc. It provides a glimpse into the diverse work styles of YouTubers, freelancers, athletes, and others.
As the future of career education, Part 4 focuses on the opinions of people in different positions regarding the direction of career education in the new era that is the Era of Reiwa. It discusses the expectations and direction of career education from the perspectives of national public officials, government personnel, professionals, school staff, etc.
In Part 2, Chapter 4, the author introduces concrete support details and unique approaches to career support for women who are victims of domestic violence, of which little has been known until now, based on the results of a survey of private support groups and other organizations.
“Career education” is now included in the curriculum guidelines as something that should be studied throughout all the schools. This book includes findings and points to note based each author’s efforts, experiences, and research, as well as advice for teachers and supporters in charge of career education. It is a good opportunity to learn about diverse ways of living and work styles, as well as one’s own way of living.
