Amid the current demand for efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in the field of architecture, environmentally conscious architecture is expected to continue expanding. Environmentally conscious architecture focuses on passive techniques utilizing solar heat, light, and airflow, as well as building planning that considers comfort and energy efficiency. As an effective tool in designing environmentally conscious buildings, environmental simulation technologically visualizes invisible elements such as heat, light, and airflow. Visualizing various environmental factors, evaluating them during the design stage, and providing feedback to inform architectural design are a means to create buildings that are both comfortable and energy efficient. However, although environmental simulation is a highly effective tool, strategies to handle constantly changing environmental elements such as heat, light, and airflow and develop systematic utilization methods for the design stage are still being devised.

In this book, designers, engineers, researchers, and other professionals actively involved in the design of environmentally conscious architecture share their insights on the design aspects of technologically-assisted environmentally conscious architecture. Although all the contributing authors use the phrase “architectural design methodology utilizing environmental simulation,” the term encompasses various approaches. We hope that this book’s readers will learn about the diverse trends in environmental architecture.

The book has two chapters. Chapter 1 compiles the presentations and discussions of designers, engineers, and researchers who participated in the symposium “Shizuoka Architecture Tea Party 2018 – Scientific Design of Architectural Environment!” which was held in 2018 as part of three programs. Chapter 2 summarizes the processes comprising architectural design utilizing environmental simulation in 11 design cases ranging from houses to government offices and university facilities. At the beginning of Chapter 2, the content titled “Design Process Utilizing Environmental Simulation” explains the environmental simulations that should be utilized at each design phase and introduces specific tools. This introductory chapter is a valuable reference for students interested in exploring environmental simulation.

Each design case presented in this book reflects an author’s underlying environmentally conscious architecture philosophy. As you read, pay attention to the design methods that have been employed and try to uncover each author’s unique ideas about environmentally friendly architecture.
