´ºÓêÖ±²¥app Forests (UTF), Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, have been established with the aim of providing an educational and research-based space related to forests, trees, and forestry. In recent years, the faculty has played a role in forest familiarization and in providing the latest knowledge on forests to the general public in addition to those affiliated with the university. There are seven UTF across Japan, with educational, research, and social collaboration activities characteristic to each forest conducted on-site.
Among the seven, the University of Tokyo Chiba Forest (UTCBF), instituted in 1894, was the first university forest in Japan. This book, published in 2014 to commemorate the UTCBF’s 120th anniversary, has been titled “A Complete Guide to the University of Tokyo Chiba Forest”—it introduces the history of the forest, which holds a special place in the hearts of many people involved. Also included are details about the forests of the southern B¨s¨ Peninsula. The book has been structured in such a way that while it provides the relevant information, it also highlights various research, education, and social collaboration initiatives currently underway, based on information on forests gathered thus far.
Chapter 1 describes the history and present condition of the UTCBF, with Section 1 offering an overview and Section 2 the history. In Chapter 2, recent activities conducted in the forest are introduced: forest management and forest industry (Section 1), the actual condition of plants (the “protagonists” in forests) and their conservation and improvement (Section 2), the animals living in the forest (Section 3), the circulation of water and materials, as seen from the perspective of forests (Section 4), and forest engineering (i.e., the machinery and technology for using lumber) (Section 5)—thus, readers can acquire knowledge about forestry as well. With plenty of color photographs and side columns throughout the book, it can be enjoyed at a glance or as a comprehensive read.
´ºÓêÖ±²¥app Forests (UTF) Press is a unique publishing house independently operated by one of the affiliated facilities of the University of Tokyo, that is, the UTF, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences. It publishes books, leaflets, and booklets authored mainly by the UTF staff, and a summary of each publication can be viewed on the UTF website (). Reading these before visiting the forests would enable one to enjoy the forests better. The publications can be purchased at the Faculty of Agriculture shop and the Komaba shop of the University of Tokyo Co-op.
