Please give a short introduction of yourself.

I am Pratima Chawla. Currently living in Pittsburgh. I completed my Doctoral course from Tohoku University (Department of Life Sciences)in 2015.

What is your favorite thing about Sendai city?

It¡¯s very green, very clean and very beautiful city. Everything is conveniently available with a very reputable and great university, Tohoku University, which adds to the beauty of the city. It¡¯s simply blends in.
People are so kind and helpful.

In what way has your impression of Sendai city or Japan changed since coming here?

I did not know much about Japan before coming here. But after living in Sendai for 4 years I simply love it. In fact I have the same perspective for the country. Everyone is very hardworking here. They give their 100% to what they do. They don¡¯t want to cause any inconvenience to others, very ethical and very well mannered. They are very kind and helpful in every aspect.

What attracted you to choose Tohoku University as a place to study?

Tohoku University is implied with great resources and opportunities. There is lot to learn in research area. The exposure to other research groups during the conferences is immense .There is option for exponential growth of your knowledge and wisdom in the respective regarding area.

In what way did you adjust yourself to Japanese culture?

I love Japanese culture. In starting it is little hard due to language barrier but once you overcome that, then there are a lot of things, which is difficult to enlist here, I enjoyed. The university helps a lot for teaching daily to daily conversion which is a great help for adjusting in new culture. There are other shimmin centers also who teaches Japanese languages free of charge and they also teach about Japanese culture. This all accumulatively helps a lot for understanding Japanese culture.

Please give a message to students or researchers in your home country who may be thinking about studying in Japan?

Studying and living in Japan is a lifetime opportunity and a great experience. Universities here are full of resources and advanced technology. You will get a chance to interact with intellectual professors and many foreign students from different parts of the world which I think, plays a great part in your personal development. Everyone here is so kind, helpful and very hard working. You can get a great exposure in your respective field from different conferences and seminars. Apart from great studies options you can experience great Japanese culture and can enjoy the beauty of the country. You can easily fall in love with every season and their festivals, Japan is a beautiful blend of advanced technology and culture. Only 30% of Japan land is used for housing and buildings, remaining is nature, which is immensely mesmerizing.
I definitely suggest everyone once in a lifetime you must live in Japan for some time, it will teach you wonderful things which you will definitely cherish in your life as I do.
